Experimental Film Festivals

There are numerous styles and formats involved in making motion pictures, or in short, what we commonly call a film. It is also known as cinema in a large segment of people. We are confronted with many commercial mainstream cinemas, thanks to the millions of people working in the film industries as well as in the documentary cinema.

There are also several cinemas made on non–linear narration based style called experimental cinema having many dimensions to it and are normally very different than the normal cinemas. This kind of cinema is also known as avant–garde cinema or underground cinema due to its typical nature.

What goes down in the making?

As mentioned earlier, the main thing missing in experimental cinema is linear narration and this is a characteristic of experimental cinema. The aim is to confront the viewer with more active background and raw cum thoughtful relation. Many abstract techniques are adopted in making them like rapid style editing, shooting sans focus etc.

The real kind of rivalry between mainstream and experimental cinema started in the late sixties. An opposite kind of stance was established between these two cadres. These films are normally very low on budget, hard hitting, and made on small or very small grants. The stranger part is that the crews involved with these movies are minimal such that sometimes they have only one cast or crew.

The main idea beneath the making of experimental cinema has been lost with time. What comes to the fore is the characteristic poetic or non-narrative approach apparently.

Exhibition of Experimental Films

The Cinema-16 organization, native to America and placed in the city of New York, was apparently first of the industry to showcase the so-called experimental films through exhibition and distribution in public. It was basically a non-profit making society, only aiming to nurture and groom talent through them. Then they showcased some genres like avant-garde, educational, scientific and performance films along with all that.

The Cinema-16 team found many predecessors as there were many venues for these non-commercial cinemas like museums, art galleries, and mini theaters keeping the rising interest of public in their issue and taking ample benefit out of that. This concept gradually moved out to Europe and northern parts of America.

The festivals that they all started to take part in were named like Ann-arbor film festival, Rotterdam International film festival, New York film festival etc. However, many of these events are restrained as of now.

Recent Experimental Film Festivals

In contemporary times, what often happens is that collectively few films are screened at a particular popular venue and are priced at lower rates and often subsidized for many. Some popular distributors of recent times are Light Cone, Canyon Cinema etc.
